2nd Conference of the European Network for Clinical Legal Education (ENCLE) in conjunction with 12th IJCLE Conference – 15-17 July 2014, Olomouc (Czech Republic)

The 2nd ENCLE Conference is titled “Euro-Clinic - Is there a distinctive identity for European Clinical Legal Education?” and it is merged with the 12th IJCLE Conference entitled “Clinic Without Borders”. The joint conferences will take place in Olomouc, Czech Republic, on 15-17 July, with an optional day in Prague on 18 July.

Benefiting from the high number of clinicians who regularly attend the annual IJCLE event, this joint conference will be an ideal place to connect with other clinicians, discover new ideas, share best practices and to discuss items related to clinical legal education in Europe, such as:

  • New clinics and new clinicians: what are the specifics of European clinics? How can you design, establish and sustain a clinic in Europe?
  • Organizing a Clinic: ideas, standards, best practices
  • Pro bono and public interest in Europe: the role of academics, lawyers and society
  • The externship model: clinics in cooperation with NGOs for the benefit of marginalized communities
  • Legal Ethics and Professionalism in Europe: professional ethics within a legal clinic
  • Moving Clinical Legal Education Forward: expanding clinical work in Europe
  • Clinic within a law school curriculum - implementing degrees and postgraduate studies in the Bologna Process (European Higher Education Area)
  • Taking Clinics to European Level - international exchange and cross border clinics
  • Clinical Methods and Assessment
  • Clinical Methodologies - workshops or trainings: street law, case theory, simulations, litigation etc.

The deadline for submission of papers has been extended to the 16th May 2014 and we encourage everyone submitting papers for the ENCLE part of the conference to focus on the priority areas listed in the bullet points above.

The procedure is easy – all you need to do is e-mail your proposal to Maureen Cooke from Northumbria University (maureen.cooke{at}northumbria.ac.uk). The proposals should follow this format:

  • Title
  • Name of author(s), role and institution, including e-mail address
  • The conference theme that the paper relates to
  • A short summary paragraph, labelled as such, which will be placed in the conference programme for the benefit of attendees so that they can choose which papers to attend (50 words maximum)
  • Brief written abstract (300 words maximum)

The proposal will then be considered by a conference planning group.

The previous ENCLE conference in Warsaw demonstrated the enthusiasm of clinicians throughout Europe and the need for discussion and exchange of information. The 2nd ENCLE conference in Olomouc is a unique opportunity to continue the efforts supporting further development of legal clinics in Europe. Everyone interested in clinical legal education is warmly invited to participate!

The conference will also include several ENCLE-specific events (e.g. the ENCLE General Assembly Meeting). Therefore, those of you who are interested in joining the European clinical community and becoming member of ENCLE, the conference in Olomouc is the best way to do that.

More information about the joint ENCLE/IJCLE conference and details of how to register can be found in the official conference brochure and from the Northumbria Law School website.

In case you would like to participate, but you do not have sufficient financial funds, the ENCLE might also have the possibility to support you. For more information on it, please contact ENCLE Secretary, Ulrich Stege (ustege{at}iuctorino.it).

The ENCLE Board is looking forward to meeting you in Olomouc!
